Why Solar Interconnection (PTO) Is Taking Longer in 2026
Here’s a frustration more homeowners are hitting in 2026: the panels are installed and inspected, sitting in the sun - and still switched off for weeks, waiting on the utility. That wait is interconnection / PTO, and it’s gotten slower in many areas. Here’s why, and how to limit it.
Quick refresher: what PTO is
PTO (Permission to Operate) is the utility’s final approval to turn your system on. Until it’s granted, the system stays off - even when fully installed. (Full explainer: interconnection & PTO.)
Why it’s slow right now
- Queue volume. As rooftop solar grows, utilities are processing more interconnection applications than ever - and many haven’t scaled their review teams to match.
- Meter swaps. Most homes need a net meter installed before PTO; meter crews and supply can be a bottleneck.
- More complex systems. Battery storage and larger systems add review steps.
- Paperwork loops. Any missing detail bounces the application back, restarting the clock.
The result: PTO commonly takes 2-6 weeks after inspection, and longer with some utilities - a big chunk of the total install timeline.
What you can (and can’t) control
You can’t speed the utility’s internal queue. You can avoid adding delay:
- Make sure your installer submits the interconnection application the moment inspection passes - not days later.
- Respond fast to any utility request for documents.
- Choose an installer who knows your utility’s process and submits clean applications (see how to choose an installer).
- Don’t switch the system on before PTO - it can violate your interconnection agreement.
Set your expectations
Even with instant permitting speeding the front end, PTO can still be the long pole. Plan for the system to sit idle for a few weeks after install - that’s normal, not a problem with your installer.
Bottom line
Interconnection/PTO is slow in 2026 mostly due to utility queue volume and meter swaps - typically 2-6 weeks, sometimes more. You can’t speed the utility, but prompt, clean paperwork from an experienced installer keeps you from adding avoidable delay.
Current as of June 2026. Interconnection timelines vary widely by utility and state.
