Instant Solar Permitting (SolarAPP+) Is Spreading in 2026
Permitting is historically the slowest, most unpredictable part of a solar install. That’s changing in a growing number of places thanks to automated “instant” permitting - and it can shave weeks off your timeline.
What SolarAPP+ is
SolarAPP+ (Solar Automated Permit Processing) is an online platform, developed with the U.S. Department of Energy / NREL, that lets local governments automatically review and approve standard residential solar permits. For eligible, code-compliant systems, an installer can get an approved permit the same day instead of waiting in a plan-review queue.
It’s been adopted by a growing list of cities and counties, and more are coming online through 2026.
Why it matters for your install
Permitting can be the biggest variable in the overall timeline - days in some places, many weeks in others. Where instant permitting is live, that step can collapse to near-zero, meaning:
- Faster start after you sign
- Fewer back-and-forth delays with the building department
- A more predictable schedule
What it doesn’t change
Instant permitting speeds the building/electrical permit - it does not remove the other steps:
- You still get a physical inspection after install (see permits & inspections).
- You still need utility interconnection and PTO before switch-on (see interconnection & PTO) - and that queue can still be slow.
So it removes one bottleneck, not all of them.
How to take advantage
- Ask installers whether your city/county uses SolarAPP+ (or a similar instant-permit system).
- Choose an installer experienced with your local process - they’ll know whether instant permitting applies to your project.
Bottom line
Automated permitting like SolarAPP+ is spreading in 2026 and can turn weeks of permit waiting into same-day approval - a real speed-up. But inspection and utility PTO still apply, so it shortens the timeline rather than eliminating the wait entirely.
