The Solar Installation Process, Step by Step

Published June 28, 2026 · By HelioRoofer Editorial

Going solar is less “panels show up and go on the roof” and more a multi-step project with several parties involved. Knowing the full sequence helps you set expectations and spot delays. Here’s the whole process, start to finish.

The 7 steps at a glance

  1. Site survey & assessment
  2. System design & engineering
  3. Permitting
  4. Installation day
  5. Inspection
  6. Utility interconnection & PTO
  7. Switch-on and monitoring

Most of the calendar time is waiting on permits and the utility, not the physical install. See how long it all takes.

1. Site survey & assessment

After you sign, the installer (or a technician) visits to measure your roof, check its condition and structure, inspect your electrical panel, and assess shading and orientation. This data drives the design. They’ll flag if your roof type or panel needs an upgrade.

2. System design & engineering

The installer produces a design: panel layout, system size, mounting plan, and electrical one-line diagram. An engineer often stamps the plans. You review and approve the final layout.

3. Permitting

The installer submits plans to your local building department (and sometimes the HOA). This is the most variable step - it can take days or many weeks depending on the jurisdiction. See permits and inspections.

4. Installation day

The actual install is usually 1-3 days. The crew mounts the racking, attaches panels, installs the inverter, and wires everything to your electrical panel. Most homes have power off for only part of a day.

5. Inspection

After install, a local inspector (and sometimes the fire department) verifies the work meets code before it can be energized. If something fails, the installer corrects it and re-inspects.

6. Utility interconnection & PTO

Your utility must approve the system and grant Permission to Operate (PTO) - and often swaps in a net meter. Until PTO arrives, the system stays off, even if it’s physically installed. See interconnection & PTO.

7. Switch-on & monitoring

Once PTO lands, the installer (or you) flips the system on. You’ll get a monitoring app to track production and confirm it performs as designed.

Who’s involved

  • You - approvals, scheduling, payment
  • Installer - survey, design, install, paperwork
  • Local building dept. - permit + inspection
  • Utility - interconnection + PTO

Bottom line

Solar installation is a 7-step project: survey → design → permit → install → inspect → PTO → switch-on. The roof work is quick (1-3 days); the calendar is dominated by permitting and utility approval. Knowing the sequence makes it easy to ask your installer “which step are we on?” Next: how long does it take and how much it costs.
